History and origins of the Maison des Papillons

Creation by Dany Lartigue

Behind this initiative is one man: Dany Lartigue. A talented painter and passionate naturalist, he has collected thousands of specimens over the years. Attracted by the fragile beauty of butterflies, he has devoted part of his life to their observation and preservation. His wish? To share this wealth with as many people as possible.

Transfer to the town of Saint-Tropez

Initially a personal space, the Maison des Papillons was then entrusted to the town of Saint-Tropez. Since then, it has been responsible for preserving and showcasing this exceptional collection. The Maison des Papillons has become a must-see for the curious and the passionate, in a town where art and nature blend harmoniously.

Collection and exhibitions

An impressive variety of specimens

When you enter the Maison des Papillons in Saint-Tropez, you’re plunged into a colorful and fascinating world. More than 35,000 butterflies from the four corners of the globe are on display. Among them are local species, as well as exotic varieties with intriguing shapes and colors. In particular, visitors can observe the rare and mysterious Mercantour Black Apollo.

Artistic staging

Dany Lartigue has not contented himself with presenting these insects under glass. He has integrated them into pictorial compositions in which the butterflies appear to evolve in their natural environment. The interplay of light and camouflage is appealing, and shows the richness of biodiversity from an artistic angle.

The different areas of the museum

The museum is divided into several rooms, each adding its own unique touch to the visit. One room features exotic butterflies, with their bright colors and surprising shapes. Another showcases French species, reflecting the region’s diversity. Visitors can also explore Dany Lartigue’s untouched workshop, and enjoy a small, contemplative garden.
